Farmers Market

One of the fondest memories I have as a child are the early morning Saturday trips downtown to go to the Eastern Market in my hometown of Detroit, MI. Now those who know me, know that large crowds give me anxiety. However, waking up at the crack of dawn to head down to the bustling eastern market- with as many as 45,000 visitors a day- was the one crowd I learned to love. The Saturday market offers a variety of fresh produce, meats, baked goods, flowers and local art. It’s an experience that is undeniably Detroit, with more than 225 market vendors sharing their produce and stories.

There are only a handful of places that hold the status of “must go to” when I visit home. My first stop is always Rocky’s Peanut Co., but they offer much more than peanuts. To a foodie like me, this store is heavenly. I come here to stock up on bulk spices. They have everything you could imagine, even their own blends. All that walking around at the market can work up an appetite, so it's a “must” to grab a slice of the most authentic pies in the city, Supino's Pizzeria! This place is a gem. They have the best thin-crust pizza and slices with funky toppings like egg and basil chili oil. YUM! What I love most is that they use organic products from local farms. (They have the farms listed on their website

My final stop is Gratiot Street Market. This is my “must go to” spot to get ALL my protein. The outside of the building is colorfully painted with murals. From the outside it may not look like a butcher market, but once you step inside and see all the vendors...prepare to be amazed. You’ll find yourself in the middle of a massive grocery store that specializes in gorgeous meats and seafood. Once you get over the initial awe, your first instinct might be to run giddily through the market like a kid in a candy store, grabbing up every meaty treat in sight./div>

I don’t live in Detroit anymore and I have yet to find anything that compares to where my love for farmers markets began. Currently I live in Maryland where they have beautiful markets. They also have strawberry and blueberry fields where I actually picked my own berries. Talk about fresh produce! My local market is Spicknall’s Farmers market and they are open everyday. You can find me there early Saturday morning. You can also catch me at Fresh Farms DC Sunday market in Dupont. They have so many local vendors. The one place I'm dying to try is the Eastern Market located right in the heart of D.C. People keep telling me that I’m going to love it! Well i hope you've been inspired to find your local farmers market and enjoy the experience!
